Polyxo.com & the Honor System
Polyxo.com is now participating in the Amazon.com Honor System Program. Throughout the site you'll see a box like the one to the right. Clicking on the box allows you to donate to Polyxo.com and help keep it on-line, current, and useful.
Running this site is not an inexpensive endeavor, particularly for a starving college student such as I am. Server space, bandwidth, internet access, and research materials do not come cheap, and I probably lose $400 a year or more keeping this site on-line.
Through the Honor System, if you so choose, you can give in any amount you desire to help with the expenses of Polyxo.com. Contributions can be as little as a single dollar, or as big as you like.
Does this mean that if I do not receive enough money to pay for the expenses of Polyxo.com that it is going to disappear from the Web? No. Teaching is important to me, for people over four feet tall as well as those under, and I will likely keep this site going even if I lose $1000 a year on it.
However, if you visit the site, have found it interesting and useful, and are willing to part with a few of your hard-earned dollars, I would appreciate your contribution. If you cannot afford to give, or would prefer not to, that's fine as well. The site will still be here and you'll still be invited to use whatever you like from it. As far as I can see into the future, Polyxo.com will never become a paid-as-you go service, it will continue to be free for those who want to use it freely.
Please note, that I have looked into other options.
In the past, Polyxo.com has earned a small percentage (usually about 2.5%) from the books that people buy from Amazon through the Suggested Reading and Resources section of the site. The money I receive from the book sales is helpful in defraying the cost of running this site, but does not cover all of my expenses. I hope that this Honor System will help fill in the gap.
Polyxo.com receives visits from about 30,000 people a month. Compared to Google, Yahoo, or the ilk, this is a miniscule number, of course, but compared to many sites out there, it's fairly respectable. This is particularly so considering I have never done marketing of any sort with it, and just about everyone that has found their way here has done so through word of mouth. I have been approached by businesses and ad companies about running banner ads and similar things on the site, but, knowing how poorly I think of them, I did not want to clutter the site, annoy my readers, or detract from the information with a bunch of flashy advertisements.
