Books

Oelwein, Patricia Logan Teaching Reading to Children With Down Syndrome : A Guide for Parents and Teachers (Topics in Down Syndrome) Woodbine House, 1995.

Teaching Reading to Children with Down Syndrome (Book Cover)(From the back cover) Teach your child to read using the author's nationally recognized, proven method. From introducing the alphabet to writing and spelling, the lessons are easy to follow. The many pictures and flash cards included appeal to visual learners and are easy to photocopy!

This easy-to-follow graded teaching guide is of particular relevance to special needs teachers, educational and clinical psychologists, speech and language therapists, and carers of children with autism spectrum conditions.

My two cents: While the title says this book is for kids with Down Syndrome, this book is simply an excellent model for teaching kids to read, particularly kids who learn visually. It is packed with great suggestions for activities, games, and books, and contains a number of reproducibles to get you up and running with a reading program.
