The Discrete Trial

The Inter-trial Interval

The inter-trial interval is a brief (three to five seconds is usually appropriate) pause between consecutive trials cueing the child that one trial has been completed, and allowing him and the teacher to prepare for the next. The ITI also allows for delivery and reception or consumption of, or interaction with whatever has been offered as reinforcement, and gives the instructor a chance to take down data for the previous trial.

In the next section we'll discuss prompting.
